I'm not sure what you mean by the terminal - I start TextWrangler by clicking the icon in the dock, then open the file through the usual menus. I believe TextWrangler does come with some command line tools, but I've never used them directly from a terminal.

[...] On the other hand, supporting old IE versions isn’t entirely straightforward. They’re difficult to debug for (particularly on a mac) and standards non-compliance means that otherwise simple fixes become unpredictable. The expense was enough, for instance, for 37signals to cease supporting IE6. Furthermore, I believe that non-compliant browsers should be opposed as a matter of principle, as many others have argued before me. [...]

Overtaking Vista is hardly an achievement though, as no one seems to be in a rush to upgrade from XP. Compared to the market share of Windows overall, Linux is pretty insignificant.

I think the idea that there will be a year of GNU/Linux on desktop is misguided.
The Percentage of GNU/Linux users in the desktop market grew last year by 0.5%.
that's nothing you say.
Not quite. If GNU/Linux users were to grow at the same rate, it would not be long until vista had been left behind.
I don't think 2008 will be know as the year of GNU/Linux on desktop, because i think the idea that there is just one year is a myth. I suspect it will enter a golden age with increased publicity and adoption.
I *do* think some people will drop DRM. but sadly I think kangaroo will fail to make this a sound victory.

I think I missed that news item about the Queen texting her message, though I'm not sure how that would work anyway given that you only have 160 characters for SMS. :)

"I’m impressed that such an old and traditional institution as the Royal Family has finally grasped modern technology and used it in a simple but effective way."

Meh, there is something similar every year: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/uk/1707903.stm ;)

I found it useful to show my gran after the event she missed. So yay for that

That is quite aggressive, although personally I push people to always upgrade to the latest stable version of any piece of software (unless there's a serious backwards-compatibility issue) because most releases fix important bugs or security holes. I suppose if you're going to upgrade from PHP 4 to PHP 5 you might as well go for 5.2 anyway (I can't seriously see many people going from the latest 4.x release to something like 5.0.2).

BTW, that's a very nice portfolio site you have there. :)

GoPHP5 supports dropping support for anything less than PHP 5.2. That's quite a bit more aggressive than PHP itself.
